If you're in the neighborhhood and looking for a nice way to spend the day, come on out and walk around the fountain in the early morning while the air is still wonderfully cool, grab a yummy breakfast at one of the cute restaurants across the street, then pop in the gallery to see all the delightful new creations made by local artists! I’ll be there all day Saturday, and look forward to meeting you.Kim Buchheithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14492069973693161936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6964470280520927476.post-63092944032921895612022-05-01T08:06:00.009-07:002022-05-01T10:14:00.876-07:00The Basics of 3D Wet Felting (Free Download)

Hello, felting friends! We get a lot of questions at the gallery about my work such as: what exactly is wet felting?; what is the difference between wet and dry (aka needle) felting?; how are felted sculptures made?; etc. In response to these inquiries, I put together a flyer that outlines the basics of creating 3D forms using wool fiber, along with some care instructions. I thought readers might appreciate it too, so am posting a high-res file (.jpg) here for you to download, print, and share. Note: This is not a step-by-step tutorial, but rather an at-a-glance overview to 3D wet felting. I do have a step-by-step printable tutorial that I provide to workshop attendees, and plan to make available as a free download here soon. Enjoy and happy making!

Kim Buchheithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14492069973693161936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6964470280520927476.post-1304680771728617992021-12-17T14:26:00.018-08:002021-12-27T19:50:57.163-08:003 Little Birds…

are at my doorstep. Actually, it's turning into a veritable flock around here! For awhile now I've been thinking about how to make a simple resist for chickadees -- and with just the right amount of internal pressure to put pesky procrastination on notice (e.g. the holiday shipping deadlines bearing down), I put my noodle on it last week and got the job done. While pleased with the resulting felted "feathered" friends, I am most satisfied with the elegant plastic resist design which solidified after a few definitely-not-so-elegant iterations (three, to be precise). Like many makers, I find the design phase (including making the prototypes) to be the most rewarding part of the creative process... and would much prefer having a team of little elves do the production of the actual inventory. But how can I complain when I get to fill any downtime with making suff -- it's like being a kid again. Note: The gift chickadees flew the coop, and these six stayed behind. If you would like to adopt one, go to the gallery in Fountain Hills to pick out your fave! Here are some of my latest experiments in machine-stitched mini wool portraits (dimensions: 3"x 4.25"). The base material is handmade felt from Merino wool. I love drawing little narratives, and this technique allows me to combine traditional illustration with fiber art. I just completed videotaping the making of this polka-dot bowl from start to finish — and will be editing the recording into shorter videos this weekend. This series of free demos will support my online workshop participants in their learning, as well as be available to any creatives who might benefit. I've learned so much from other artists; I'm excited to be able to give back. These video tutorials will be uploaded to my Youtube channel and I'll post the link here as soon as they're live.
Kim Buchheithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14492069973693161936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6964470280520927476.post-26994249291346113632020-09-04T08:04:00.006-07:002020-09-11T07:59:03.550-07:00Black Felted Wool Rabbit

Look who showed up in the field of rabbitbrush this morning! Two new rabbits join the fluffle this week (the grey rabbits with blue and gold polka dots depicted above). The grey base fiber is a Shetland wool roving from Outback Fibers. This wool takes a bit more muscle to felt than the brown mixed breed fiber (R.H. Lindsay), but the color is gorgeous and worth the effort. Well, years ago I was gifted with a huge "marketing sample" of processed Pima cotton from a gin in Yuma, Arizona. While the fibers were too short for a novice spinner like me to spin, I saved this generous gift knowing that it would be useful some day. For the past few years, I've been able to use this lovely cotton to stuff all of my wool sculptures. To weight my Rabbit sculptures, so they sit up tall and have a nice heft, I use a hand-sewn silk bag of small river stones. After inserting the bag of stones inside the sculpture, I stitch the bottom closed with wool thread, and sew on a label. My hope is that buyers appreciate all the handwork and the natural materials used in each piece.Kim Buchheithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14492069973693161936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6964470280520927476.post-1981089355564345602020-08-28T16:20:00.015-07:002022-05-10T16:07:46.412-07:00Audio Description of "Sacred Landscape" Series

Completed this woolly trio, inspired by the elements, this morning. I duplicated the original study (the white polka dotted piece in earlier blog post) and added white wool to the tips of the dreadlocks in this newer version. The tree-like piece was the most challenging with its tapering vertical stripes; they needed lots of tending to in order to keep them straight-ish during the felting process. I am pleased with how nicely they play together as a trio, but not yet sure if I'll try scaling them up. The house is filling up with my felted wool Sentinels and Talismans, and we may soon run out of space to store them :) I suppose this work is in response to the pandemic, and the desire to create strong (and sometimes quirky) protective "dieties" for the world. I will continue to explore these themes in the studio and see where things go. Wishing you all strength, protection, and hearts full of hope and joy.
Completed another small (26" ht.) "Sentinel" last night — with crescent moon. Love the mixed-breed dark grey wool (from R.H. Some snaps of work I'm continuing to develop that I started creating while in Mendocino. Working title of series is, "Sentinels" — guardians, watching over us; which seems especially comforting now during this global pandemic. I'm also exploring the phases of the moon; tethered as it is to our planet and to our individual bodies. Photos: The large sculpture is 43.5" (h) and the small one is 23.5" (h); both consist of hand-felted wool hollow forms, with concave (closed) tops; bases are either fired/glazed clay or painted terracotta. #wildlywoolly #feltedsculpture #feltedwoolKim Buchheithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14492069973693161936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6964470280520927476.post-29800143476810935582020-04-22T10:52:00.000-07:002020-04-22T11:07:07.343-07:00Residency in Mendocino, CA

Boy, time sure does fly! I'm just now getting around to posting some of the pics from the 4 weeks I spent in glorious Mendocino (at the Mendocino Art Center, MAC) during an artist residency this past February. It was such a gift to be able to have a beautiful, huge, well-lit (with a view of the ocean!), and well-appointed (thanks to the wonderful Linda Cloonan) fiber studio all to myself, 24/7. My time on the headlands allowed me to begin a new body of work combining clay and fiber, which I'm currently scaling up in my studio. It truly was heaven on earth. Artist residencies are incredibly valuable, and possibly necessary, in order to have uninterrupted time to bring ideas to fruition. Also, I met some amazing people — fellow artists, Art Center staff, locals/neighbors, and workshop attendees. The opportunity to teach a Botanical Vessels using Pre-Felts class was a bonus. Thank you to all the people at MAC for this incredible opportunity and for your deep commitment to artists and art making. I hope to teach another workshop at MAC in 2021, so stay tuned!Kim Buchheithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14492069973693161936noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6964470280520927476.post-42327789147208114232020-01-21T09:15:00.001-08:002020-04-24T08:37:53.559-07:002020 Arizona Fiber Arts Retreat

Last week's 9th annual Arizona Fiber Arts Retreat (AFAR) was a fantastic success. This event, hosted by the talented and generous Kimberly Hatch, brings together fiber lovers of all stripes to share ideas, learn, discover new tools and methods, purchase fiber and other goodies, and enjoy being with kindred spirits. I was honored to be able to teach (with the help of my ever-supportive hubby) a full-day workshop with an amazing group of students. We cut out botanical shapes from pre-felts (ala Matisse) and felted them into our vessels with great results. Every finished vessel was unique and lovely — just like each workshop participant. Thank you to all who attended my workshop and for all who make AFAR the incredible fiber event that it is! See you next year (Save the date: Jan. 13-16, 2021) :)Kim Buchheithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14492069973693161936noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6964470280520927476.post-79759589812317308542020-01-14T13:36:00.002-08:002020-01-14T13:46:38.524-08:00Installation Pics from "Explorations in Fiber"

This past Thursday was the opening reception of Tohono Chul's "On the Desert: An Exploration of Fibers," exhibition. I was pleased to have two of my pieces included in this exhibit (topmost photo) alongside some stunning work by several other regional artists. Two favorite pieces included, "Tobasco" made from old sewing patterns (resulting in a spray of krinkled shibori-style tubes with colorful threads) by Monica Zavala-Durazo, and the wonderful “burr fur” coat by Kate Long Hodges (from her Marry Me Earth series). Curated by James Schaub and surrounded by lush Sonoran Desert, this exhibit and the gardens are worth a visit!Kim Buchheithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14492069973693161936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6964470280520927476.post-56138787674210940022019-01-20T11:03:00.002-08:002019-01-20T11:05:42.650-08:00AFAR's 2019 Vessels & Votives Workshop

We just got home from the 8th annual Arizona Fiber Arts Retreat in Prescott, Arizona. 2019 was a banner year for this fun and information-rich event! It's a place to make new friends and connect with old ones, meet master instructors and talk shop over lunch, enjoy a fashion show, and take an incredible fiber-related workshop or two (e.g. weaving, needle- and wet-felting, shibori and indigo dyeing, naalbinding, and more!). The word has spread and workhops filled up almost immediately... so mark your calendar if you want to get in on this in January 2020! I was lucky enough to be able to teach another Vessels & Votives class this year with an amazing bunch of creatives. We worked hard and had some good laughs... and everyone walked away with a beautiful handmade vessel or votive that they were proud of. Great job, everyone!Kim Buchheithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14492069973693161936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6964470280520927476.post-42625938191707304852018-10-23T10:59:00.003-07:002020-01-14T13:48:10.017-08:00Art for a Cause

Phoenix Pride is one of those great organizations staffed by some of the best people in the world! My husband and I had the pleasure of being part of a group show sponsored by Phoenix Pride and hosted by Gregg Edelman at his very-cool Exposed Studio & Gallery. (Gregg is a super generous guy who is masterful at throwing great parties at the drop of a hat.... he's also quite the photographer.) The art event was a huge success with the top three juried pieces (including mine!) to be exhibited soon at the Parsons Center in Phoenix, AZ. Thank you Ryan Starzyk, Mike Fornelli, and the rest of the team at Phoenix Pride for this great opportunity, your graciousness, and your support of the arts — and thank you for your steadfast work in the LGBTQ community and for human rights, in general. (A big fat congrats to Ace Walton who took first place with a fantastic mixed-media portrait using, among other things, "cigarette ash and borrowed cosmetics" — how wonderful is that!)Kim Buchheithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14492069973693161936noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6964470280520927476.post-30329404000299377802018-10-15T15:24:00.000-07:002018-10-23T11:22:47.648-07:00Vessels & Votives Workshop at Grand Canyon :: Fall 2018 Recap

The first week of October brought a dozen creative people from around the country to the Grand Canyon. Their goal was to learn how to felt — and that's what they did! This year's Vessels & Votives workshop was hosted by Grand Canyon Association's Field Institute (thank you GCAFI for this and for all you do to preserve and protect Grand Canyon National Park). Over the weekend, Mary Rooney generously shared her dyeing expertise with the class, offering participants the opportunity to dye wool (using acid dyes) for the next day's project. We also had the pleasure of having two guest speakers join us this year: NPS Park Ranger Ahsa Jensen gave a fascinating talk about historic uses of natural fibers in the region — and GCAFI instructor Slim Woodruff shared her extensive knowledge of Grand Canyon with those early birds who attended the sunrise rim talk. Ahsa also made available dried yucca fibers that we harvested last Spring in anticipation of the class (note: one must have an NPS collection permit to do this). Overall, it was a big success with participants creating a small felted vessel or luminaria (using an 8.5" resist) on Day 1... and then really stretching themselves to create a large felted vessel (using a 21" resist) on Day 2. I am so impressed with this group! If you're interested in felting at the Grand Canyon, be sure to sign up for the felting workshop in 2019... we'd love to have you!Kim Buchheithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14492069973693161936noreply@blogger.com0
