Migration Project

Felted Wool Sculpture by Kim Buchheit
Felted Wool Sculpture (detail) by Kim Buchheit
This winter I am developing an exhibit which addresses immigration issues, oppression and silencing, borders and arbitrary boundaries, migration routes, and allowing and trusting in natural processes. This most recent piece is an 18" x 10" sculpture which will eventually be erected via wire or starch and finished with embroidered lettering on the back side. I'm carding all the wool fibers by hand in order to blend the roving and yield very subtle color shifts. More to come :)

Felted Votives with Woolly Branch

Design and hand-crafted by Kim Buchheit; © Kim Buchheit
Oh, I am just so happy to have finished this piece! I was experimenting with assemblage of the ropey branch... first sewing, then binding the pieces together with embroidery thread. Then, after deconstructing it all, I settled on needle-felting the pieces together after binding the joints with a bit of cormo wool. In the end, I just wanted to use only wool in the piece. But I do love mixing wool with other materials, too. Maybe next time :)

Felted Sculpture :: Chocolate Tentacled Pod

© Felted sculpture by Kim Buchheit (100% merino wool; 6" x 36")
Finished this tentacled pod today and hung it from a nearby Juniper tree to photograph, as thunder boomed all around. The tree's shaggy silver bark is so gorgeous, and the dark brown Welsh wool sculpture, with pink and orange shades of felted balls inside, delighted there. If the rain wasn't headed our way, I would have let it spend the afternoon outside. :) ~ Kim

Felted Sculpture :: Wall Pods

Felted Sculptures © Kim Buchheit

A series of needle-felted sculptures that I've been developing. The dark brown-grey wool is 60% llama, 30% wool, and 5% silk... it's such a handsome blend! (The contributing llamas were Triumphus, who has since passed, and Charley, who now lives in Vermont. Thanks, guys.) These pieces are approximately 24 inches in height; am working on large-scale versions. ~ Kim
